Psychiatric hospital “unsuitable and unsafe”

Posted in: Medical Negligence

A psychiatric hospital in York is to be closed after inspectors described it as “unsuitable and unsafe for patients”.  The Archbishop of York originally built the hospital in 1777 as the ‘County Lunatic Asylum’, which was later changed to the Bootham Park Hospital. The hospital houses two acute admission wards, one for men and one for women, and also has an elderly assessment unit for people aged over 65. A recent inspection by the Care Quality Commission (CQC), however, found the hospital to be no longer safe for patients.

The Labour MP for York Central, Hugh Bayley, described the hospital’s problems as “very, very serious” and urged the government to fund the construction of a new hospital. The chief executive of Leeds and York Partnership NHS Foundation Trust, Chris Butler, said that the issues raised had been taken very seriously and that a £2.7m scheme had been launched to refurbish the three individual inpatient wards. He said that these should be complete later this year.

Designed over 200 years ago

Mr Butler said that the report’s findings highlighted the “historical underdevelopment and underinvestment in mental health services in York”, an issue that must be amended. Mr Bayley said that the hospital had been designed for patients over 200 years ago, a design that no longer fits its purpose for the care of patients today.

Funding for the hospital and a renovation timetable have been secured.
