A 60-year-old Salisbury man, originally from Sardinia in Italy, has received a six figure sum in compensation for developing the fatal disease, mesothelioma whilst working as a chef. Mr Luigi Pes had moved to Britain, aged 31, in 1982. He had been working for La Gondola Italian Restaurant in Fisherton Street in Salisbury where he was exposed to asbestos from the seals on the pizza oven and in the store room ceiling. Mr Pes was not warned by his employers about the dangers that working with asbestos could pose to his health. When he sought medical advice about a long-term chest infection, it was found that he had contracted the asbestos related disease. Mesothelioma is an incurable cancer affecting the lining of the lungs.
“I’m doing my best to enjoy each day I have left”
Mr Pes, who has a wife and two grown-up children, appointed solicitors to secure compensation from his employers as he felt that they were liable for his illness. He stated: “Despite my progressive illness and the restrictions it brings, I’m doing my best to enjoy each day I have left. I’m not angry but I do feel strongly that more should have been done to protect me from getting this disease”.
His solicitor investigated the case rigorously and urgently to ensure that Mr Pes could benefit from his compensation for as long as possible during the rest of his lifetime. He stated: “Whilst this will never make up for Mr Pes’ poor health it will at least afford him some financial relief and the knowledge that the employers who caused his suffering have been held to account”.
