Care home patients ‘at risk’ of malnutrition and dehydration

Posted in: Medical Negligence

A recent Care Quality Commission (CQC) report highlighted some worrying findings after a recent inspection of a Warrington care home found that residents were “at risk of dehydration and malnutrition”. The report noted a number of serious concerns at the care home, including the fact that staff at Birch Court lacked general patient contact skills and were also unable to answer basic healthcare-related questions. It was even found that some patients were being locked in their rooms, and because of failings with regards to the proper use of safeguards, their “human rights were not protected”.

Following the inspections that were carried out in August, the report highlighted one particular problem that caused great concern. The report noted that staff failed to monitor patients’ food and fluid intake, which meant that vulnerable patients were at serious risk of malnutrition and dehydration. It was also found that four of the care home’s patients did not have access to a nurse call alarm, described by the inspectors as completely unacceptable.

“We have acted immediately”

The report made a final finding with regards to medication administration, with one patient being prescribed medicine for ‘extreme agitation’ consistently for 23 days, despite there being no symptoms of ‘extreme agitation or aggression’.

A spokesman for Birch Court said: “We are absolutely committed to making the required changes highlighted in the recent CQC report […] We have acted immediately to ensure we meet the high standards of care that we expect.
