A senior prison officer, who was working in the Segregation Unit at HMP Swaleside in Kent’s Eastchurch, has finally received compensation following being forced out of his job due to a violent attack by an inmate. Iain Fleming suffered horrendous physical injuries as well as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) whilst working in the canteen. Support worker Rachel Portsmouth has been found guilty of placing her hands around the neck of 20-year-old Chante Johnson and of hitting her with a slipper. Chante who has special needs and requires 24 hour care is a resident at Pegasus School, in Caldwell. She suffers from severe autism and has great difficulty communicating. A man has been charged after punching three strangers in the face as they left a bar in Plymouth. 25-year-old Dominic Shorten assaulted the individuals in an unprovoked attack, knocking one of them unconscious. Mr Shorten admitted the three counts of assault against Mr Alexander, Ross Pettitt and James Spingnall on 17 September at Plymouth Magistrates’ Court. It has been decided that no criminal charges will be made following the deaths of two women in a nightclub crush in 2011. 22-year-old Nabila Nanfuka and 19-year-old Laurene-Danielle Jackson were both out at Lava & Ignite in Northampton on the 18th of October 2011. The government has proposed new legislation that will see willful negligence being treated as a criminal offence under NHS changes that are to be revealed next week. This decision has been made following the recent Mid Staffordshire scandal and others similar, which will see those guilty of “willful neglect” being sentenced to jail.
